It was very hard for me to hear about John Edwards and his confused and shocking behavior. I remember how disappointed I felt when he left the presidential race so soon; I honestly thought he had the credentials and character to make a wonderful president.
Why do we continue to expect our leaders to be these perfect beings when we ourselves know how many times a day we are less than perfect in our choices and our decisions? John Edwards must know he has ruined any possibility of any future political aspirations. Maybe, deep down, he is like so many of us who create the drama, the trauma, the complications in life so that we can be distracted from facing the true agonizing pain within and that overwhelming sense of guilt and failure.
I am sure this whole story has many layers, players, and lessons of morality. I feel sad for Elizabeth Edwards and I wonder what journey she is on that includes so much pain and suffering. I feel sad for the child born into this much controversy. I also feel sad for the Edwards' children who must live with the choices their parents have made.
I think the only way out of all this is not be judgemental - to see the public situation as it is "shocking" but the people who are involved are still humans. They are humans who like ourselves are trying to learn about the inner land of emotional needs and the outer land of responsibilities to the society we live in. I am sure in that moment Mr. Edwards made his dramatic decision, he thought it would make him happy! What a price he is paying and what an illusion happiness can be; happiness which causes so much misery to others can never be real.
